#19: Understanding Authenticity: What Is It, Why Does it Matter?

Season 1, Ep. 19

This week is a basic introduction to the topic of Authenticity. It is such a buzz word in the self-help and personal growth community, but I feel like so many of us really don't have a good grasp on what it even means.

In this podcast I am:

  • Defining Authenticity, and breaking that definition down
  • Discussing the benefits - why would we even want it?
  • Highlighting the 3 things that most often stop us from being Authentic
  • Introducing the concept of Expressing vs Impressing

Authenticity is a huge topic, and this is really an introduction. But I believe having a focus on living an authentic life is one of the keys to living a genuinely fulfilling and happy life.

In this episode I also mention Brene Brown's book - The Gifts of Imperfection

I also reference Sarah Hernholm's TED talk - Authentic Self Expression: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ati3O3-iZls

  • 2. #165. Compassion vs Enabling

    22:29
Kate is breaking down the crucially important difference between supportive compassionate helping, and enabling bad behavior. There is a blurry line between the two that is often complicated by personal and caring relationships. But it is a slippery slope, and while no one ever intends to enable behavior in another that is unhealthy, supportive helping can turn into enabling behavior. In this episode Kate outlines: The difference between Compassion & EnablingHow enabling can do harmThe relationships where we need to be aware of the potential to become an enablerHow we can recognize enabling behavior in ourselves3 ways we can move away from enabling, and back towards compassionKate recommends Nancy Levin's Here to Thrive Interview - Episode 132. • 12. #164. Are You Heading in the Wrong Direction in Life?

    23:21
In this episode we are asking the question - How Do You Know if You're Heading in the Wrong Direction in Life? What are the signs you can rely on, and how can you check in with yourself to see if you re-route. Host, Kate Snowise, talks about having to go-back on a recent decision about a direction she was hell-bent on taking. She talks about going through three phases:Realizing that she was being called to check-in after seeing signs and obstacles on her pathOpening up to possibilityBefore exploring and tuning in with yourself to work out if she was on the right pathKate offers some questions that she asked herself. These are: What particular needs or values are driving this decision deep down? (What needs of mine are being met here?)How do I want to feel deep down? Is this taking me closer to that? What advice would my higher-self have for me right now? Journalling on these questions helped Kate identify that she need to re-route and adjust course, moving away from a vision she had in her head and onto another path. As she notes, this was uncomfortable, but once she had explored and tuned-in, she could be at peace with her decision and see the longer term implications it would bring with it.
